The Academy Awards may be over, but the fashion hangover remains. If, like us, you can’t stop thinking about the Oscars, here are a few things you can take away from the biggest party in Hollywood.

We’re too used to seeing white stones worn formally, close to the collar bone and as chokers. Charlize Theron showed us how to wear them casually, almost 70’s style. Her Harry Winston neckpiece was a pendant on a chain of solitaires that came down to her chest. Not to miss, the stones graduated at intervals to form gradation in the neck-piece. Drool.

Move like Cate Blanchett

The Aussie actress’s gown had 3D detail in the form of sewed-on flowers on her Armani Privé gown. These created movement when she walked. Imagine a dress with paillettes that announces your arrival; or multiple tiers that swing when you dance; or long-petalled flowers that sway in the breeze. Anyway, a 3D detail is the way to make any party dress memorable.

Mismatch like Saoirse Ronan

Next time you are forced to dress up for a formal do, rebel by mismatching an ethnic piece like Saoirse did. She wore the same kind of earrings, but in different colours in each ear to create intrigue. You can do the same with chaandbaalis, ear studs or chandelier earrings — especially if you are the kind of girl who hates to choose between colors and buys two of everything.

Go sunny like Alicia Vikander

We don’t give this colour enough wardrobe space, even though its a sure way to get noticed. And when we do, we relegate it to day wear like sun dresses. Lets stop doing that and bring some sunshine into our evenings and nights. Yellow ghagras, yellow gowns, yellow cocktail dresses — lets colour everything sunny like Alicia Vikander.

Lets pay attention to our belts

Who says jewelry has to be only around necks, wrists or on our ears. Brie Larson accessorised her Gucci gown with a chunky bejewelled belt. Especially if you have an enviously waist — toned or proportionate to your curves — a nice shimmering belt is a great way to highlight it. Not to forget, we have a tradition of kamarbandhs, so it would go just as well with a sari or lehenga. To balance the bling, go without a neckpiece and just wear quiet studs in your ears.
