Tamasha Movie Review - Why always the same story!

Exuberant locale, Picturesque scenes, far away on the island, a girl meets boy, introduce each other, fall in love, crazy societal pressure, and break up only to marry in the end. Sounds all familiar? Well, we don’t expect this from an Imtiaz Ali film. Do we? All of us have got mixed reviews for this movie. So, does the Rockstar, Jab We Met, Highway director bring any novelty in the movie or does he tread on the same lines? Does he build the characters enough for the audience to connect and empathize?

Let’s explore!

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor starrer film, ‘Tamasha’ exhibits Imitiaz Ali’s most involuted story-telling till now. If the beginning and end of a movie are good, then it strikes a chord in the audience’s minds. This movie’s beginning is little complicated with theater, story-telling, and role-playing, all at once.  It shows Ranbeer’s childhood and his fondness of stories and characters of Romeo-Juliet, Alladin, Laila Majnu, Ramayana to the extent that he used to collect or even steal money to hear stories from the storyteller (Piyush Mishra). The movie picks up with spectacularly vivid and quaint locations of Corsica (thanks to Ravi Varman’s cinematography!), the splendid music by AR Rahman , and, of course, the ‘they-belong-to-each-other’ chemistry between Deepika and Ranbir. The movie is about Tara and Ved who meet on a French island, decide to stick to only lies to introduce themselves, and not to stay in touch with each other only to meet in Delhi few years later.

The second half is better and has more substance. The focus was on Ranbeer (Ved) who had succumbed his life to a job of Project Manager because of life and its demands (Let's blame the pragmatic father, too!) and how he had forgotten his real life where he was mesmerized with stories and theater. The mirror conversations, the singing auto-driver was a bit over the top. It was an intriguing journey of Tara and Veda but it looked like the story revolved around Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika was just a catalyst to unleash the storyteller in him. We wanted to know about Deepika, too! There is a heartbreaking scene in the latter half when Deepika begs him to stay followed by the song, “Agar Tum Saath Ho!”.  Hats off to Deepika’s terrific acting! It gave me goosebumps and looked SO real! While, Ranbir aced all his characters in the movie extremely, extremely well.smiley

The movie sends out the message loud to find your true inner self by breaking the shackles of mundane existence, finding your true inner self that has been lost to a robotic life. Follow your heart might sound like a cliché but the message is delivered beautifully in the movie. heart

With Deepika and Ranbir's marvelous chemistry and acting and Imitiaz Ali’s direction, and the soulful must, I believe it is ATLEAST a one-time watch! Rest, I will let you watch and decide! Do give your feedback in the comments section.

P.S.- The movie raises crazy expectations for a wanderlust! (Why do I always find the grumpiest guys sitting next to me on flights!? *cries* )
