Wearing the perfect attire to work is a daily challenge. Like every other woman, I struggle to choose the appropriate outfit which suits my personality. Something which looks classy and minimalistic at the same time.
Having worked with advertising agencies in the past, I always chose semi-formal dressing, which complemented my nature of work that included long working hours, running around for meetings and sometimes even taking public transport.
Two years ago, I made a switch from being the Digital Marketing Head at a leading Digital agency in Mumbai to a Senior Consultant at a European IT major. The role, position and work environment automatically demanded a very formal corporate look. Sometimes I even have to travel abroad for business meetings and corporate events, which means I am constantly interacting with top C-level officials of the organization and hence, have to look presentable.
Here’s how picking the right outfit and accessories helped me get the polished, minimalistic and comfortable look that suits my work profile:
Breaking the stereotype
When it comes to corporate dressing most women choose trousers, shirts, midis, skirts and formal dresses. Having worked in the online advertising domain for over a decade now, my style of dressing has always been semi formals or even casuals on days when I didn’t have to attend client meetings. In a corporate world, sadly you don’t have the luxury of dressing up casually on weekdays, especially if you hold a senior position at work or have to interact with top officials.
If you are someone who likes wearing dresses like me, you can pick plain kurtas, long tunics or knee-length dresses that fit perfectly to your body and at the same time look classy and appropriate for the office. I like to team up my tunics with shrugs or jackets sometimes and a well-fitted bottom in black or beige.
Accessories add an extra oomph!
I love accessorizing my outfits with big earrings or a statement necklace. I remember when I was in Europe recently for some business meetings, some of my Dutch and French colleagues were mesmerized by my big earrings and necklace that I had teamed up with my formal shirts and dresses. If you pick the right jewelry, you can convert any western formal into an Indo-western look. Voylla’s oxidized jewelry collection definitely adds that extra oomph to any minimalistic attire.
“Style is a way to say who you are, without having to speak.” – Rachel Zoe. Your style of dressing definitely determines your position at work and I would always let it do all the talking. But, to each his own.
